South Island Part 2

Day 4: Milford Sound

We took a boat ride at Milford Sound. The weather was rainy and foggy, but it was cool; it reminded me of Jurassic Park and I kept expecting to look out the window and see a pterodactyl fly by. On the drive back through the mountains, there were hundreds of little waterfalls coming down the hills. It looked sweet as!

Day 5: Lord of the Rings horseback adventure

Yes, I’m a nerd and paid a good amount of money to take a horseback ride through some of the LOTR movie sets. We rode through the beech forests that are seen a lot at the end of the first movie. We even saw the exact tree that Boromir dies on (don’t worry, I’m laughing at myself too)! The mountains, river, and far-reaching plains that we also saw were gorgeous.

Day 5 was also Nicole’s 21st birthday! We celebrated by getting sushi and another Fergburger for dinner, and then yummy gelato for dessert. It was ladies’ night at the bar/club next to our hostel so we took the birthday girl down for a fun night of dancing. Ha ha needless to say, we stuck out like sore thumbs. There we were, these group of young American girls all dressed modestly, not having any drinks. Oh well, we had ourselves a good time. J

Day 6: Goodbye Queenstown

Day 6 was consisted mostly of our 7 hour car ride to Christchurch. This city is still trying to recover from the major earthquake it experienced in September of last year. There’s still construction everywhere. Our first night in the city was spent at Hagley Park; there was a big concert/celebration going on for Waitangi Day. Waitangi Day celebrates the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840, which granted New Zealand its independence. There were even fireworks at the end!

Day 7: O Holy Sabbath

Sunday consisted of:

-group dinner

-Tim Tam slam

-watching My Best Friend’s Wedding

Day 8-10:

-Akaroa

-beach day (I got sooo burned!)

-Botanical Gardens/Christchurch Cathedral

-Denny’s in New Zealand! We were all ridiculously excited having REAL ketchup again, instead of tomato sauce. Yes, we are BYU princesses and proud of it. J
